Big Block Dodge brings its instrumental “groosion” music to Southern Appalachian Brewery tonight! The trio was started in 2002 in East Flat Rock and features Hendersonville residents Bill Altman (guitar), Jeff Hinkle (bass) and Robin Tolleson (drums). Big Block Dodge was featured in the 2003 book, Jambands, in which Dean Budnick wrote, “Looking for another term you can employ to characterize the music of your favorite genre-busting, improv-based group? Big Block Dodge respectfully submits groosion. Original instrumentals bridge collective interests including bebop, Jeff Beck’s mid-’70s efforts, Joe Satriani, and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Big Block Dodge’s songs do incorporate some unconventional time signatures and passages, but they are never too dissonant and often return to groove-laden territory.” BBD has played alongside Derek Trucks, Yellowjackets, Joe Bonamassa, Garaj Mahal, Merle Saunders, and Col. Bruce Hampton. Rod Morgenstein of The Dixie Dregs says, “Big Block Dodge combines a cool blend of rock and fusion with a smattering of country licks and jazz stylings thrown in for good measure. A great combination of feel and chops.” BBD’s album is titled Manifold Destiny. “We enjoy jamming out,” says bassist Jeff Hinkle, “but it isn’t about the thirty-minute song. It’s blending our respective talents, and pulling off a wild show.”
